Kenji’s Light of Hope, is dedicated to Kenji, a young man with Down syndrome, who is a keen percussionist at Igari MTRC. Kenji’s home was badly flooded during the tsunami, and he was rescued with his family after 3 days. Let’s ensure that he’s able to play the sound block again on all the samba and Latin tunes that he loves!
Today marks the 3 month anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Music therapist Nami Yoshihara had some staggering statistics: 15,405 people are confirmed dead, 8,095 are missing, and 90,109 are in evacuation shelters. There’s so much more work to do in Japan.

Your contribution will enable individuals with disabilities and the elderly to receive music therapy in Miyagi Prefecture, an area that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.
For over 12 years, The Igari Music Therapy Research Center (Igari MTRC) has provided music therapy services to individuals with developmental disabilities and the elderly in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. A key component of Igari MTRC’s outreach efforts includes participation in Commuon the Big Band, an integrated ensemble with disabled and non-disabled musicians.
The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami devastated towns and villages in Miyagi Prefecture, leaving thousands of individuals displaced and without employment. In response to the natural disaster, Igari MTRC established the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund to ensure that music therapy continues to be provided to those in need. Now more than ever music therapy is critical in helping displaced individuals cope with the trauma of the disaster and alleviate stress. Music allows them to express and process their feelings. Music is a powerful uniting force. Continuing Igari MTRC’s involvement in Commuon the Big Band will allow these displaced individuals to work together and support each other, reestablishing normalcy and a sense of community in a shattered town. Recovery efforts are expected to take years, and individuals with developmental disabilities and the elderly will need extra support, so that they can cope with the ongoing stress and process their loss in a meaningful and creative way.
